St. Padre Pio — A Life Built on the Rosary

Francesco Forgione was born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy, and entered the Capuchin Franciscan order at age fifteen, taking the name Pio. In 1918, he received the visible stigmata — the five wounds of Christ's Passion — which he bore until his death in 1968, a period of fifty years. During that half-century, he celebrated Mass daily, often for hours, heard confessions for up to sixteen hours a day, and reportedly bilocated to pray with the sick and dying across the world. Throughout all of it, the Rosary was his constant companion. He is reported to have prayed fifteen decades of the Rosary every day and urged everyone he encountered to do the same, calling it a weapon against evil and a direct line to the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Pope John Paul II, who had a personal devotion to Padre Pio and visited his shrine before becoming pope, beatified him in 1999 and canonized him on June 16, 2002. His feast day is celebrated on September 23.
