Frequently Asked Questions
What metals are your St. Christopher medals available in?
Our St. Christopher medals are available in sterling silver (.925 solid silver), 14kt gold filled (a thick layer of 14-karat gold permanently bonded to a jeweler's brass core — will not tarnish or fade), and 14kt solid gold (heirloom quality). Chains come in 18-inch lengths (standard for women) and 24-inch lengths (standard for men). All medals are made in the USA by Bliss Manufacturing with a lifetime guarantee against tarnishing or manufacturing defects.
Do you have St. Christopher sport medals?
Yes. Our Patron Sport Medals collection includes St. Christopher medals paired with specific sports — baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hockey, swimming, track, golf, lacrosse, and more. Each medal features St. Christopher on one side and the sport on the other. These are the ideal gift for Catholic athletes at any level, from youth league to college to professional competition.
Can I keep a St. Christopher medal in my car instead of wearing it?
Absolutely — keeping a St. Christopher medal in your car is one of the oldest and most popular Catholic traditions. Some drivers clip the medal to their sun visor, others hang it from the rearview mirror, and many keep it in the glove box or console. The medal serves as a constant prayer for safe travel every time you drive. We also carry St. Christopher visor clips specifically designed for this purpose.
Is a St. Christopher medal a good gift for a new driver?
Yes — a St. Christopher medal is the classic Catholic gift for a teenager or young adult who just received their driver's license. It places them under the protection of the patron saint of travelers from their very first solo drive. Many parents and grandparents give the medal alongside the car keys. It is equally popular for college send-offs, study abroad departures, and anyone about to make a long-distance move.
Can a St. Christopher medal be blessed?
Yes. Any Catholic priest or deacon can bless a St. Christopher medal. Once blessed, it becomes a sacramental — a sacred object that carries the spiritual graces of the Church's prayer and places the wearer under St. Christopher's intercession for safe travel. Many families have the medal blessed before a loved one's departure on a trip, deployment, or move. Our medals are not pre-blessed, as selling blessed items is considered simony under Catholic canon law, but they arrive ready for blessing.
The Legend of St. Christopher
The man who would become St. Christopher was not always called by that name. According to tradition, he was born in the 3rd century as a man of enormous size and strength — some legends describe him as a giant, others simply as a powerfully built man with a fearsome appearance. His original name may have been Reprobus or Offerus. He was determined to serve the greatest king in the world, and he searched until he found him.
He first served a powerful earthly king, but left when he discovered the king feared the devil. He then sought out the devil himself, but abandoned Satan when he saw the devil tremble before a roadside crucifix. Reprobus realized that Christ was the greatest king of all. A hermit living beside a dangerous river told him that the best way to serve Christ was to use his great strength to carry travelers safely across the water — a crossing where many had drowned.
Reprobus agreed, and for years he ferried people across the river on his massive shoulders. One stormy night, a small child asked to be carried across. Reprobus lifted the boy easily, but with each step the child grew heavier and heavier. The river rose. The current surged. By the time they reached the far bank, Reprobus was near collapse. He said to the child, "You were so heavy — it felt as though I carried the whole world on my shoulders." The child replied, "You carried not only the world, but Him who made it. I am Jesus Christ, the King you serve." He then told Reprobus to plant his staff in the ground. By morning, the staff had bloomed into a living tree — a sign of the miracle. From that moment, Reprobus was known as Christopher — from the Greek "Christophoros," meaning "Christ-bearer."
This is the image on every St. Christopher medal: a large bearded man with a staff, carrying a child on his shoulder through rushing water. It is a picture of service, faith, and the discovery that Christ is present in every journey — especially the dangerous ones.
Why St. Christopher Became the Patron of Travelers
The legend of the river crossing made Christopher the natural patron of anyone who faces the dangers of travel. In the Middle Ages, travel was genuinely perilous — roads were rough, rivers were uncrossed, bandits roamed the countryside, and sea voyages claimed thousands of lives. Medieval pilgrims traveling to Rome, Santiago de Compostela, or the Holy Land would pray to St. Christopher before departing and carry his image for protection. Churches along major pilgrimage routes painted enormous murals of St. Christopher on their walls — often near the entrance — so that travelers could see his image and invoke his protection before continuing their journey. The tradition held that anyone who looked upon the image of St. Christopher would not die that day without the sacraments.
As travel evolved, St. Christopher's patronage evolved with it. When automobiles replaced horses, St. Christopher became the patron of drivers. Motorists began keeping his medal on their dashboard or clipped to their visor — a tradition that continues today. When aviation emerged, pilots and flight crews adopted St. Christopher. When the military deployed troops across oceans, soldiers and sailors carried his medal into war. Today, St. Christopher's patronage covers travelers of every kind: drivers, pilots, sailors, truckers, cyclists, hikers, commuters, students studying abroad, missionaries, and anyone who leaves home and needs to come back.
St. Christopher and Athletes
St. Christopher is also the patron saint of athletes — a connection that may seem surprising until you consider the legend. Christopher's strength, endurance, and determination to carry his burden through the raging river mirrors the qualities every athlete needs: physical power, perseverance, and the will to finish the race. Catholic athletes — from high school sports to professional leagues — have worn St. Christopher medals for generations as a prayer for safe competition and protection from injury.
Our Patron Sport Medals collection includes St. Christopher medals paired with specific sports — baseball, basketball, football, soccer, hockey, swimming, track, golf, and more. Each medal features St. Christopher on one side and the sport on the other, making it the ideal gift for Catholic athletes at any level.
The St. Christopher Medal in Cars
One of the most enduring Catholic traditions is keeping a St. Christopher medal in your car. Some drivers clip the medal to their sun visor. Others hang it from the rearview mirror. Many keep it in the glove box or console. The practice began in the early days of the automobile when car travel was genuinely dangerous — unpaved roads, no seatbelts, unreliable brakes — and Catholic drivers turned to the same saint who had protected travelers for centuries.
Today, the tradition continues because the need hasn't changed. Americans spend an average of nearly an hour a day in their cars. Accidents remain one of the leading causes of death. A St. Christopher medal in the car is not superstition — it is a prayer. Every time you glance at the image of Christopher carrying Christ through the water, you are reminded that you are not driving alone. It is one of the most common reasons people buy St. Christopher medals — not to wear around their neck, but to keep in their vehicle.
"St. Christopher Protect Us"
The inscription that encircles the image on a St. Christopher medal — "St. Christopher Protect Us" — is a direct invocation of the saint's intercession. It is not a request for good luck. It is a prayer addressed to a saint whom the Church honors as a powerful intercessor before God. When you wear this inscription or keep it in your car, you are asking Christopher to do for you what he did for Christ: carry you safely to the other side.
Some St. Christopher medals include the alternate inscription "St. Christopher Be My Guide" — a prayer that extends beyond physical travel to the journey of life itself. Many Catholics wear the medal not only for road trips and flights but as a daily reminder that every day is a journey, every step is taken under God's providence, and St. Christopher walks beside them.
A Note on St. Christopher's Feast Day
In 1969, during the reform of the Roman calendar after the Second Vatican Council, St. Christopher's feast day (July 25) was removed from the universal liturgical calendar — not because the Church declared him fictional, but because the historical details of his life could not be verified with certainty. This caused widespread confusion, with many Catholics mistakenly believing that Christopher had been "de-sainted." That is not true. St. Christopher remains a recognized saint in the Catholic Church. His feast day is still celebrated in many local calendars and in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox traditions. His patronage of travelers is unchanged. The Church simply acknowledged that the legend, while deeply meaningful, may contain elements that cannot be confirmed as historical fact — a situation that applies to many beloved saints from the early centuries of Christianity.
Catholics continue to honor St. Christopher with full confidence. His medal remains one of the most popular devotional items in the world, and his intercession for safe travel is as trusted today as it was a thousand years ago.
