What is a name day?

A name day — also called a feast day or saint's day — is the feast of the saint whose name you bear. The tradition is rooted in the practice of naming children after saints at baptism, connecting the child's identity to a specific intercessor in heaven. In many Catholic countries, name days are celebrated as warmly as birthdays — in some countries, more so.

The practice of celebrating name days has deep roots in Italy, Spain, Poland, Hungary, Greece, and the Catholic regions of Germany and France. In Poland, for example, "imieniny" (name days) are often considered more important than birthdays. In Latin America, the feast of one's patron saint is marked with family gatherings, flowers, and gifts. In Scandinavia, each day of the calendar has one or two associated names.

In the United States the tradition is less formalized but deeply present in Catholic family culture — particularly in Irish, Italian, Polish, and Latin American communities. Many Catholic parents give their children two names specifically so they have two feast days to celebrate.
