St. Pio of Pietrelcina — A Life Built on the Rosary

Francesco Forgione was born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy, and entered the Capuchin order at age fifteen, taking the name Pio. In 1918, he received the visible stigmata — the five wounds of Christ — which he bore until his death in 1968. For five decades, pilgrims traveled from around the world to his friary in San Giovanni Rotondo to receive his counsel, his absolution in the confessional, and his blessing. He founded the Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza (Home for the Relief of Suffering), a hospital that still operates today. Throughout his life, Padre Pio treated the Rosary not as a devotional accessory but as the central weapon of spiritual combat — he reportedly prayed as many as thirty to forty Rosaries per day and was rarely seen without his beads in hand. Pope John Paul II, who had a personal devotion to Padre Pio, canonized him on June 16, 2002, before a crowd of over 300,000 in St. Peter's Square.
