Who Is St. Thomas Aquinas?
Why Is St. Thomas Aquinas the Patron Saint of Teachers, scholars, students, universities, academics, those studying theology?
Thomas modeled what teaching at its best looks like: patient, systematic, genuinely curious, willing to engage opposing views seriously rather than dismissively, and always oriented toward truth rather than winning arguments. His method — the Scholastic disputatio — required him to present the strongest possible version of views he disagreed with before responding. This intellectual honesty in service of truth is the model for every teacher.
He is also the patron saint of students preparing for exams, which makes his patronage practically relevant to millions of Catholics in schools and universities every year. The prayer to St. Thomas Aquinas before study is a centuries-old tradition.
Prayer to St. Thomas Aquinas
St. Thomas Aquinas, who spent a lifetime
in pursuit of truth and found it inexhaustible —
pray for those who teach.
Those who must find a way
to make the difficult clear
for those who are not yet ready for it.
Those who have taught the same lesson
for twenty years and must find
the freshness in it one more time.
Pray for those who study.
Give them the patience for what is hard,
the humility to begin again when they fail,
and the grace to remember
that understanding is a gift,
not a conquest.
St. Thomas Aquinas, pray for us. Amen.
