Patron Saint of Expectant Mothers

Patron saint: St. Gerard Majella · Feast day:

St. Gerard Majella is the patron saint of expectant mothers, mothers in difficult pregnancies, those trying to conceive, and unborn children. The most widely invoked saint for pregnancy in the Catholic world, his medal is worn by pregnant women and given as a gift at baby showers across the United States.

Who Is St. Gerard Majella?

St. Gerard Majella (1726–1755) was an Italian Redemptorist lay brother from Muro Lucano who lived only 29 years but produced an extraordinary volume of miracles and is still one of the most widely invoked saints in the United States. As a child he was refused admission to the Capuchins for poor health; he eventually joined the Redemptorists as a lay brother and worked as a tailor. During his short life he was credited with numerous miracles including bilocation, reading of consciences, and miraculous knowledge of hidden things. He was once falsely accused of a serious moral failing and maintained complete silence in his own defense — only speaking when the woman who accused him retracted her statement. He was canonized in 1904. His feast day is October 16.

Why Is St. Gerard Majella the Patron Saint of Expectant mothers, pregnancy, unborn children, those trying to conceive, difficult labors?

St. Gerard Majella's patronage of expectant mothers comes from the account of a handkerchief. During a visit to a family, he left behind a small handkerchief. When the family returned it, he told them to keep it as it would prove useful to them. Years later, a woman of the family was in extremely difficult labor and in danger of death. The handkerchief was applied and, according to the account, both mother and child survived safely.

This account spread quickly through the Catholic community and established Gerard as the patron of expectant mothers throughout southern Italy and, eventually, the world. His medal is one of the most commonly given sacramentals at baby showers, and many Catholic hospitals in the United States have a particular devotion to him in their maternity wards.

He is also invoked for those struggling with infertility — asking for his intercession both for the gift of conception and for the protection of new life once conceived

Prayer to St. Gerard Majella

St. Gerard, gentle brother,
patron of the life that is forming
in the dark and the quiet —

pray for expectant mothers.
For those carrying their first child in wonder.
For those carrying a difficult pregnancy in fear.
For those who have lost pregnancies before
and bring both hope and dread to this one.

Pray for unborn children.
For their health, their safe arrival,
and the home that waits for them.

And pray for those who long to conceive
but have not yet.
Hold their longing before God
with the tenderness you showed
to every life entrusted to your care.

St. Gerard Majella, pray for us. Amen.
