Patron Saint of Athletes

Patron saint: St. Sebastian · Feast day:

St. Sebastian is the patron saint of athletes. A Roman soldier whose physical endurance during martyrdom became legendary, he has been invoked by athletes, soldiers, and those seeking physical strength and courage for over 1,700 years.

Who Is St. Sebastian?

St. Sebastian was a Roman soldier martyred around 288 AD under Emperor Diocletian. He served in the Praetorian Guard while secretly being a Christian, ministering to Christian prisoners. When his faith was discovered, Diocletian ordered him shot with arrows and left for dead. He survived — a widow named Irene nursed him back to health. Rather than flee, Sebastian returned to confront Diocletian directly and was martyred a second time, beaten to death with clubs. His feast day is January 20. His image — bound to a post, pierced with arrows but calm and resolute — became one of the most iconic images in Western art and a symbol of physical endurance in the service of faith.

Why Is St. Sebastian the Patron Saint of Athletes, soldiers, archers, police officers, those with plague?

St. Sebastian's patronage of athletes comes from his physical endurance, military background, and the remarkable fact of surviving his first martyrdom. The image of a man bound, pierced with multiple arrows, and not only surviving but returning voluntarily to face death again is one of extraordinary physical and spiritual courage. Athletes have always recognized in Sebastian someone who endured suffering with the body in the service of a higher cause.

His military background also connects him to athletes — both soldiers and athletes train the body for peak performance and face physical trial with disciplined courage. The overlap between soldier and athlete was recognized in Roman culture, and Sebastian bridges both worlds naturally.

He is particularly popular among runners, cyclists, and team sport athletes. Youth sports teams in Catholic schools have long placed themselves under his patronage, and his feast day on January 20 marks the beginning of the athletic year for many Catholic schools and leagues.

Prayer to St. Sebastian

St. Sebastian, soldier and martyr,
you trained your body for battle
and your soul for God.

When arrows could not stop you,
you rose and stood again.

Grant us something of that courage —
in competition, in training, in defeat,
and in the small daily disciplines
that build the person before they build the athlete.

Keep us from injury, from pride,
and from forgetting why we compete.

St. Sebastian, pray for us. Amen.
