The Seven Catholic Sacraments – Infographic

The Catholic Church recognizes seven sacraments as outward signs of inward grace, instituted by Jesus Christ and entrusted to the Church for the sanctification of the faithful. These sacraments mark the most important moments of a Catholic's life — from birth to death — and each one is worth celebrating with intention.

Baptism

The sacrament of initiation, through which one is reborn as a child of God and incorporated into the Church. Usually administered to infants but open to adults as well, Baptism involves the pouring of water and the words "I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." Through this sacrament the person is cleansed of original sin and receives the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Confirmation

The sacrament of strengthening, through which one receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit and is deepened in the faith. Administered by a bishop through the laying on of hands and anointing with holy oil, Confirmation seals the graces received at Baptism and equips the confirmed for active life in the Church.

Eucharist

The sacrament of the Lord's Supper, through which one receives the Body and Blood of Christ under the forms of bread and wine. The center of Catholic worship, the Eucharist is celebrated at every Mass. Catholics believe that in receiving Communion they are united with Christ in a uniquely profound way.

Penance (Reconciliation)

The sacrament of reconciliation, through which one confesses sins to a priest, receives absolution, and is assigned a penance. Through this sacrament Catholics believe their sins are forgiven and they are reconciled both to God and to the Church. It is also known as the sacrament of Confession.

Anointing of the Sick

The sacrament of healing, through which a person facing serious illness or death receives grace, strength, and — where God wills it — physical healing. A priest anoints the forehead and hands with holy oil and offers prayers on behalf of the sick person. The Church has always kept the sacred items needed for this sacrament close at hand.

🎁 The traditional Sick Call Set — a crucifix with candles — is kept in the home so a priest can administer this sacrament at any time. Browse our Sick Call Set Crucifixes.

Holy Orders

The sacrament of ordination, through which a man is ordained as a deacon, priest, or bishop. Through the laying on of hands by a bishop and the prayer for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, men are set apart for a special role as leaders and ministers of the sacraments in the Church.

Matrimony

The sacrament of marriage, through which a man and a woman enter into a lifelong covenant with one another and with God. The rite of Matrimony involves the free exchange of vows, the blessing of rings, and the blessing of the couple by a priest or deacon. Through this sacrament the spouses give themselves entirely to one another in a union that reflects Christ's love for the Church. Catholic marriage is not merely a civil contract — it is an unbreakable sacred bond ordered toward the good of the spouses and the raising of children in the faith.
