St. Gertrude the Great (1256–1302) was a German Benedictine mystic and one of the great saints of the medieval Church. Her prayer for souls in purgatory has been used by Catholics for over 700 years. She is patron of the West Indies and is closely associated with devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Her feast day is November 16.
