Patron Saint of Travelers

Patron saint: St. Christopher · Feast day:

St. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. His name means Christ-bearer in Greek — and the legend of how he earned that name has made him one of the most widely venerated saints in the Catholic world, especially among drivers, pilots, and anyone setting out on a journey.

Who Is St. Christopher?

St. Christopher was martyred around 251 AD during the Roman persecution under Emperor Decius. His historical records are limited, but he has been venerated continuously in both Eastern and Western Christianity since at least the 5th century. In 1969 the liturgical reforms removed him from the universal Roman Calendar due to uncertainty about historical details — not a denial of his existence or sanctity — and he remains on the calendars of many dioceses, celebrated July 25. His name means Christ-bearer in Greek. The famous legend describes him as a giant who carried travelers across a dangerous river and one night carried a child who grew impossibly heavy, bearing the weight of the world. The child revealed himself as Christ — and Christopher became the patron of all who journey.

Why Is St. Christopher the Patron Saint of Travelers, drivers, motorists, sailors, athletes?

St. Christopher's patronage of travelers comes from the legendary account of his life as a ferryman who carried travelers across a dangerous river. The night he carried the Christ child and bore the weight of the world gave rise to his patronage of all who travel — those who carry others, face danger, or set out on journeys of any kind.

His medal is one of the most widely worn Catholic sacramentals, placed in cars, on boats, and carried in wallets as a sign of asking his intercession on every journey. The prayer to St. Christopher before travel has been used by Catholics for centuries — predating the automobile by over a millennium in its basic form.

While his removal from the universal Roman Calendar concerned some Catholics, the Church removed him from the liturgical calendar only — it did not declare him non-existent or strip him of his patronage. Private devotion to St. Christopher remains fully permitted and widely practiced throughout the Catholic world.

Prayer to St. Christopher

St. Christopher, bearer of Christ,
you carried the weight of the world
without knowing what you held.

Protect us now as we set out —
on roads we know and roads we do not,
by air, by sea, by every way that takes us
from those we love and toward those we seek.

Bring us safely where we are going.
And if the road holds what we cannot foresee,
hold us as you held the child —
steady, and close.

St. Christopher, pray for us. Amen.
