St. Thomas Aquinas is the patron saint of teachers, scholars, and students. The greatest theologian in Catholic history, he devoted his entire life to the pursuit and communication of truth — and his patronage extends to everyone who teaches, studies, or seeks understanding in any discipline.
Who Is St. Thomas Aquinas?
St. Thomas Aquinas (1225–1274) was an Italian Dominican friar and the most influential theologian in the history of the Catholic Church. Born into a noble family in the Kingdom of Sicily, he pursued a life of scholarship and prayer against his family's wishes, joining the Dominicans and studying under St. Albert the Great in Cologne. His Summa Theologica — left unfinished at his death — remains one of the greatest works of systematic theology ever written. Thomas famously said near the end of his life that all he had written seemed like straw compared to what he had seen — a mystical experience so overwhelming it silenced his pen. He was canonized in 1323 and declared a Doctor of the Church. His feast day is January 28.

Those who must find a way
to make the difficult clear

the freshness in it one more time.
Pray for those who study.
Give them the patience for what is hard,
the humility to begin again when they fail,
