Who Is St. Timothy?

St. Timothy was a young Christian from Lystra in Asia Minor (modern Turkey) whose mother Eunice and grandmother Lois were Jewish Christians. He became one of St. Paul's closest companions and most trusted co-workers, accompanying Paul on his missionary journeys and eventually serving as bishop of Ephesus. Two of Paul's letters in the New Testament are addressed to him — First and Second Timothy — offering pastoral guidance on leading the Church. St. Paul explicitly mentions Timothy's stomach ailments in 1 Timothy 5:23, advising him to drink a little wine for the sake of his stomach and his frequent ailments. Timothy was martyred around 97 AD for opposing a pagan festival. His feast day is January 26, shared with St. Titus.

Why Is St. Timothy the Patron Saint of Stomach problems, digestive ailments, stomach pain?

St. Timothy's patronage of stomach problems is one of the most directly scriptural of all patronages. In 1 Timothy 5:23, Paul writes explicitly: No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments. This is a genuine pastoral concern addressed in a canonical New Testament letter to a real person — Timothy had a real, documented history of stomach problems.

This unusual Scriptural grounding makes Timothy's patronage of digestive ailments particularly well-established. Most saints become patrons through post-mortem miracles or legendary connections. Timothy's patronage comes from a letter written to him during his lifetime.

Catholics invoke St. Timothy for chronic digestive conditions, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach pain, and stomach-related illness of all kinds — asking the intercession of a man whose own physical limitations did not prevent him from serving the Church faithfully for decades.

Prayer to St. Timothy

St. Timothy, companion of Paul,
whose stomach troubles were well-known enough
to be addressed in a letter that has lasted two thousand years — you served the Church faithfully
despite a body that did not always cooperate.

Pray for those whose digestive ailments
diminish daily life — who must plan around pain,
who cannot eat what others take for granted,
whose chronic discomfort is invisible to everyone but them.

Ask God for healing where healing is possible,
and for the grace to serve well
with whatever health we have.

St. Timothy, pray for us. Amen.
