Patron Saint of Soldiers

Patron saint: St. Michael the Archangel & St. Georg · Feast day:

St. Michael the Archangel and St. George are the two principal patrons of soldiers and military personnel. St. Michael leads the heavenly armies in Scripture and has been the patron of soldiers since the earliest centuries of the Church. St. George is the model of the Christian warrior — the soldier who puts his faith above his orders.

Who Is St. Michael the Archangel & St. Georg?

St. Michael the Archangel is one of the three named archangels in Scripture. He appears in Daniel 12:1 as the great prince who protects God's people, in Jude 1:9 disputing with the devil over the body of Moses, and in Revelation 12:7-9 leading the heavenly army that casts Satan from heaven. His name means Who is like God — a battle cry. He shares his feast day of September 29 with St. Gabriel and St. Raphael.

St. George (died c.303 AD) was a Roman soldier martyred under Diocletian for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. The legendary account of his slaying a dragon to save a princess became one of the most celebrated images in medieval Christianity — representing the Christian warrior defeating evil. He is patron of England, Georgia, and numerous military units and orders.

Why Is St. Michael the Archangel & St. Georg the Patron Saint of Soldiers, military personnel, police officers, paratroopers, the dying?

St. Michael's patronage of soldiers comes directly from his scriptural role as the commander of the heavenly armies. He is not a patron by association or legend — he is the warrior described in Scripture, the one who fought and won the original battle against evil. For soldiers who face real enemies and real danger, Michael is the patron who understands warfare not metaphorically but literally.

His patronage extends to all branches of the military, to police, to paramedics, and to anyone whose work requires putting themselves in harm's way to protect others. In many military units, St. Michael's medal is given at graduation and worn as a sign of asking for his protection in the field.

The prayer to St. Michael before deployment and before dangerous operations has been prayed by Catholic soldiers for centuries. It asks not for victory over a human enemy but for protection against the spiritual forces that accompany violence, fear, and moral injury — the wounds that do not show on the body.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel & St. Georg

St. Michael, commander of the heavenly host,
you know what it is to go into battle.
You know what it is to face an enemy
who fights without mercy and without rest.

Protect those who serve now —
in places far from home,
in conditions that should not exist,
carrying weight that should not have to be carried.

Guard them from harm.
Guard them from the darkness
that combat lets in.
Guard them on the way out
and on the way home.

And for those who do not come home —
receive them, we pray,
with the honor that is owed them.

St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us. Amen.
