Patron Saint of Protection

Patron saint: St. Michael the Archangel · Feast day:

St. Michael the Archangel is the primary patron saint of protection in the Catholic tradition. The heavenly warrior described in Scripture who stands guard over God's people, casts out evil, and defends the innocent is the natural patron of all who need protection — physical, spiritual, and moral.

Who Is St. Michael the Archangel?

St. Michael the Archangel is one of only three angels named in Sacred Scripture, alongside St. Gabriel and St. Raphael. His name in Hebrew — Mi-ka-El — means Who is like God and is understood as a battle cry asserting God's uniqueness and supremacy. He appears in Daniel 12:1 as the great prince who stands guard over God's people, in Jude 1:9 disputing with the devil over the body of Moses, and in Revelation 12:7-9 leading the heavenly army that casts Satan and his angels from heaven. His feast day is September 29, shared with St. Gabriel and St. Raphael on the Feast of the Archangels. In 1886, Pope Leo XIII composed the famous Prayer to St. Michael and ordered it prayed after every Low Mass until 1964.

Why Is St. Michael the Archangel the Patron Saint of Protection, soldiers, police, paramedics, the church, the dying?

St. Michael's patronage of protection is the most direct of any patron's — his scriptural role IS protection. He is the guardian appointed by God to stand between his people and the forces that threaten them. He does not protect by negotiation or accommodation but by standing firm against evil in the name of God.

His patronage of protection covers every dimension: physical protection for those in danger, spiritual protection against evil and temptation, moral protection for those facing pressure to compromise their integrity, and protection at the hour of death — when tradition holds that he escorts the souls of the faithful to God's presence.

The St. Michael medal is the most widely worn Catholic sacramental for protection — carried by soldiers, police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and anyone setting out on a dangerous task. The Prayer to St. Michael is prayed by millions of Catholics daily as a morning offering of protection and an act of confidence in his intercession.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael the Archangel,
whose name is a battle cry —

stand between us and what threatens us.
Not only the dangers we can name and prepare for
but the ones we cannot see coming,
the ones that arrive without warning,
the ones that do not announce themselves.

Protect our bodies.
Protect our souls.
Protect our families.
Protect the integrity we have worked to build.

And when evil comes — as it will —
be what you have always been:
the one who does not flinch,
the one who stands firm,
the one whose answer to darkness
is simply: Who is like God?

St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us. Amen.
