Patron Saint of Police

Patron saint: St. Michael the Archangel · Feast day:

St. Michael the Archangel is the patron saint of police officers. The heavenly warrior who stands between good and evil, who enforces divine justice and protects the innocent, is the natural patron of those who do the same in the temporal order. His medal is among the most widely worn sacramentals in law enforcement worldwide.

Who Is St. Michael the Archangel?

St. Michael the Archangel is one of three named archangels in Scripture. His name means Who is like God — understood as a battle cry asserting the uniqueness and supremacy of God. He appears in Daniel 12:1 as the great prince who stands guard over God's people, in Jude 1:9 disputing with the devil over the body of Moses, and in Revelation 12:7-9 leading the heavenly army that casts Satan from heaven. He shares his feast day of September 29 with St. Gabriel and St. Raphael on the Feast of the Archangels. Pope Leo XIII composed the famous Prayer to St. Michael in 1886, ordering it prayed at the end of every Low Mass until 1964.

Why Is St. Michael the Archangel the Patron Saint of Police officers, law enforcement, soldiers, paramedics, the dying?

St. Michael's patronage of police comes from his fundamental scriptural role: he is the one who stands between the forces of evil and those who need protection. He enforces divine justice. He does not negotiate with evil or accommodate it — he opposes it directly, in service of those who cannot protect themselves. This is precisely what police officers are called to do in the temporal order.

The connection has been recognized by Catholic law enforcement for generations. Police academies with Catholic foundations often place themselves under Michael's patronage, and his medal is a standard gift at graduation ceremonies. In many departments, the St. Michael medal or patch is worn as a sign of asking his protection on duty.

His patronage also covers the moral dimension of police work — the daily decisions about when to use force, how to treat people in vulnerable moments, how to maintain integrity under pressure. Michael is not just the patron of physical protection but of righteous action in morally complex situations.

Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel

St. Michael, who stands between
the innocent and those who would harm them —

walk beside those in law enforcement today.
Those who begin each shift not knowing
what it will ask of them.
Those who make decisions in seconds
that will be examined for months.
Those who carry the weight
of what they have seen and cannot unsee.

Keep them safe.
Keep them just.
Keep them from the bitterness
that this work can grow in a person
who was not bitter when they started.

And bring them home.

St. Michael the Archangel, pray for us. Amen.
