Patron Saint of First Responders
Patron saint: St. Michael the Archangel & St. Florian · Feast day:
St. Michael the Archangel and St. Florian are the patrons of first responders — including paramedics, EMTs, firefighters, and police. They are invoked by those whose work requires running toward danger while others run away, and whose daily shift may include moments that cannot be left at the door when they go home.
Who Is St. Michael the Archangel & St. Florian?
St. Florian was a Roman military commander in the province of Noricum (modern Austria) martyred around 304 AD for refusing to execute Christian prisoners. Miracles of firefighting were attributed to him after his death, making him the patron of firefighters, and by extension of all who respond to emergencies involving fire, accident, or disaster. His feast day is May 4.
Why Is St. Michael the Archangel & St. Florian the Patron Saint of First responders, paramedics, emts, firefighters, police, rescue workers?
St. Florian's patronage comes from his own military background and his willingness to face fire — literal and metaphorical — rather than abandon his principles. For firefighters and rescue workers who enter burning buildings and dangerous situations, Florian is the patron who chose danger over safety, duty over self-preservation.
Together they cover the full range of first responder work: the spiritual protection against evil that first responders encounter (Michael) and the physical protection in dangerous operational environments (Florian). Their medals are among the most commonly given at first responder graduations and ceremonies.
Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel & St. Florian
St. Michael, first among defenders —
St. Florian, who ran toward fire —
walk beside those who respond today.
The paramedic who arrives at scenes
that should not exist.
The firefighter who enters
what others are running from.
The EMT who works with bare hands
and too little time.
Keep them from harm.
Keep them from the darkness
that this work can carry home.
And for those whose shifts
have changed them in ways
they have not yet understood —
bring them to the help they need,
without shame,
in their own time.
St. Michael and St. Florian, pray for us. Amen.
y demasiado poco tiempo.
Guárdalos del daño.
Guárdalos de la oscuridad
que este trabajo puede llevar a casa.
Y para los que sus turnos
los han cambiado de maneras
que todavía no han comprendido —
llévalos a la ayuda que necesitan,
sin vergüenza,
a su propio tiempo.
San Miguel y San Florián, rueguen por nosotros. Amén.
